Among the most venerated and largest U.S. Black-owned integrated real estate enterprises, Cruz Companies is founded on humble beginnings. John B. Cruz Jr., known to all as Bertie, established the John B. Cruz Construction Co. in 1948 and “helped to foster minority businesses and strengthen inner city communities,” as Boston Herald reported in 2008 upon his passing. Son of Cape Verdean immigrants, Bertie cultivated committed leadership and a relentless focus on community, quality & integrity that nurtures minority businesses, reinvests in underserved neighborhoods, celebrates heritage, and redefines affordable housing.
Over the years, the family-held organization established Cruz Development Corporation, with a commitment to creating high-quality housing in even the most challenging contexts, as well as Cruz Management Corp., a property manager for over 1,300 apartments with expertise in relocation services, too. We’ve also established Cruz C.A.R.E.S., giving back to our communities through scholarships, enrichment programs, and fun outdoor adventures.
